NEGOTATIONS UPDATE:
First Meeting with New Mediator

On day four of the nationwide strike, CUPW Negotiators met for the first time with the new mediator sent by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS), along with one of the other mediators that has been working with the parties since August.

Rather than meeting CUPW and Canada Post together, the mediators held separate discussions with each party. They moved between the parties’ rooms, relaying issues and working to find some common ground.

The parties focused on a number of outstanding issues related to the RSMC bargaining unit. After 12 months of discussions, the employer finally began to move on the pressing issues. Resolving these issues could pave the way to agreements; the more individual issues are resolved the better.

Your action to withdraw your labour has made the Government and in turn Canada Post take notice. It is no longer us saying you support the demands; you are showing that support for your demands in real time. The Negotiators thank you for your support. Know that your voices are being heard at the table. It is unfortunate that Canada Post management forced us to strike, losing money and our benefits in the process before finally dropping indefensible demands.

Movement is a good sign, but we need more to negotiate two collective agreements. We will be discussing more issues today, and the Urban Unit will find out if there is movement on their side.

We are 55,000 strong, and together, we are unstoppable.
