Basic Shop Steward
This course aims to provide new stewards with basic training, knowledge, and confidence.
Topics include the different roles of the steward, how to investigate and file a grievance, communication skills, shop steward rights, the steward as organizer/mobilizer, and key provisions of the urban operations and RSMC collective agreements.
Basic Health & Safety – Level 1
In this course, we want to bring health and safety back to its political beginnings. CUPW health and safety representatives will explore the different interests of the employer and the union in health and safety. Participants will practice ‘facing management’ and discuss ways to mobilize members around health and safety issues. At the same time, they will develop the skills and knowledge they need to feel confident in participating with management on joint health and safety committees.
Secretary-Treasurer
A Local Secretary-Treasurer is a required position on the Local Executive Committee. The functions of the LST can be categorized as Financial, Membership, and Administrative.
Some objectives of this course are:
- To show the importance of the LST functions as constitutionally mandated.
- To show that certain functions overlap between finances, membership records, and control and administration.
Basic LCRMS
The objectives of this course are:
- To become familiar with the material that is used to update a route.
- To learn the importance of route updates in ensuring correct compensation for the work you do.
- Practice checking time values to ensure they reflect the work that is actually done.
- Learn to provide the right material to ensure your rights are respected.
Harassment & Violence Awareness
This course is intended to raise awareness of CUPW members about:
- What workplace harassment and violence are.
- The responsibilities of the employer, the union, and individual members in creating an environment free of harassment / violence.
- How CUPW members can work to prevent and stop harassment / violence.
- The avenues for redress that members have if they are being harassed.
- To develop assertiveness skills to deal with harassment / violence.
